Is it time to change the gun control law after VA Tech Incident?

It is time to pass a bill that restricts the availability of GUNS.

Even after the VA tech incident I am suprised to see no politician or media speak about gun control. Is it time to change the gun control law after VA Tech Incident?
Of course we should

Let the hunters have rifles. Get rid of the hand guns and assault weapons.

People that indicate that by taking guns away, then only criminals have guns are idiots. Really, when was the last time you read about a robbery gone bad because the victim had a gun for protection..........Never. And believe me, the NRA would not let propaganda like that slip. It just does not happen. Is it time to change the gun control law after VA Tech Incident?
The meth heads, gangsters and crazy people will find ways to get weapons. If you try to repeal this the black market for weapons will just grow completely out of the hands of people who can use them to protect themselves into the hands of the criminals and murders.
No - there are already adequate gun control laws.

Maybe a law requiring schools to report people who act psychotically, like this guy did. He set fires and made bomb threats before the shooting.
The shooter had legal access and rights to posses fire arms. If you made them harder to obtain he stll would have been able to obtain them. I am just thinking that amount of rounds he was able to fire because of the size of the clips that you can legally buy and own now attributed to the high amounts of fatalities. I think they need to ban assault and semi automatic hand guns because if you have 4 clips you get 60 shots so with two guns and two spare clips you can kill 60 people with well placed shots. If you had a six shooter that would only be 24 with far more time to reload so it could have been far less injuries and deaths. The defense industry runs the government, media and us by fear and lobbying that is why it gun bans and restrictions won't be discussed.
Guns don't kill people people kill people. If you want stricter law or take away the right to bare arms move to Europe. May be we need to follow the laws in place already.
No...We should make it a bit harder to get guns, but the thing is, I can make a bomb out of everyday household things. That student would have exacted his revenge one way or another.
Good question! I don't know the answer but, it is a good question.

How about this: Since there will always be violent people, should we train people to defend themselves with guns?

Are guns the problem, the solution, neither or both?

During 1545 to1879 a highly civilized country with advanced guns decided to return to swords: Japan gave up guns and returned to swords, perhaps to allow for those more concerned with honor and pain who needed a way to express their ire or revenge.

I am not a preacher but, if guns ARE the solution, do consider swords, they are seldom used to kill unintentionally and, we may yet learn, the VA Tech killings, in the mind of the killer, were unintended victims.

But, if his intent was to satisfy some offense or a lack of respect, consider that we all probably know people with a similar problem, albeit, to a much lesser degree or dormant.

Careful what you write, some of them may be reading this column -or writing Answers...

But, do consider that our minds are hard to tame and by the time ';experts'; or the police know about a real problem, it's too late. A teacher replied ';It's a parental problem, it's not my problem!'; Why is it not everyone's problem, including parents and schools?

Maybe, speaking like a wannabe-Preacher, the problem is not in the gun but in the mind. While we will never eradicate Evil, contrary to the views of some high officials (how did they get those ideas? Has it been done before?) Only God can vanquish Evil but, not yet. All that believe in Evil must believe in God, but I digress...

Perhaps, we should accept our human complexity and stop being ruled by sound-bytes. Perhaps, we should develop our mind and stop accepting simple-minded assertions. Perhaps, real Education includes learning about values, including the value of a human life and not depend on the police to be the first ones to teach anyone that mutual respect is essential for a civil society and nation.

There is something wrong in fighting ';violence with violence'; But, I digress, sorry!
Taking guns away would actually make crime worse cause just like every other illegal thing you could get them on the black market. if that was to happen then mostly just criminals would have guns. also a crossbow or compound bow either one can do just as much and sometime more damage as a gun.
try to give me a (gun control law) that would have prevented this. What happened is a example of what happens when you have an unarmed public and a armed criminal. stop trying to take guns from honest citizens
No. It should be changed so that us good citizens can protect ourselves. Already, most liberal states like NY, MA, NJ make it impossible for a good, law-abiding citizen the right to bear arms. I know - cause I'm in NY. The terrorists and criminals will always find guns, and so us good citizens are sitting ducks and make great target practice. By the way, remember the 2nd amendment of our constitution that was clearly written out by our founding fathers? Somehow, our government continues to think they are above the constitution because they are increasingly becoming a tyrannical government. People need to stop being so naive.
No. Gun control causes crime. Gun control has never worked anywhere so why cite it as a solution?

I think it was a tragedy first and foremost and my thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their families.

The killer alone caused the crime, but the high number of victims is directly caused by gun control. The Virginia Tech killer never registered his gun, so why cite registration as a solution?

They were just sitting ducks with no way to defend themselves much like the victims of Colin Ferguson. Concealed-carry advocates warned us all long ago to expect tragedies like this as long as we have gun control.

When only criminals have guns the rest of us can only ponder tactics like ';notifications.';

In a state where concealed-carry is allowed or promoted, the loss of life could have been much less. He may have shot one or two, but a concealed-carrier would have dispatched him right quick.

Sadly there is no way to prevent a killer with a gun. In tribal Africa where there are no manufactured guns, tribesman make them from pipes and rubber-bands so clearly gun control is not the answer. You can make a gun out of wood in an hour! He could have stabbed just as many with a knife.

Since you will never stop the OFFENSE, we must allow ourselves a DEFENSE. We are not all of one culture anymore, so violence will only increase.

HB 1572 was a Virginia state bill to allow college students to carry arms on campus to protect themselves from tragedies like what happened at Virginia Tech. The bill was defeated

The spokesman for Virginia Tech was happy to hear the bill [HB 1572] was defeated. ';I'm sure the university community is appreciative of the General Assembly's actions because this will help parents, students, faculty and visitors feel safe on our campus.';

The fact is NOT passing the bill allowing students to defend themselves caused many more deaths. States that pass concealed-carry laws experience lower crime rates, Texas is a good example of this.

The only way to prevent these killing rampages is concealed-carry. Would you rather protect yourself or wait for the folly of police or school ';notification?”
This question has been asked 100's of times today. What surprises me is that there is incredible consensus among conservatives and liberals, Gun control does not deter or prevent gun violence.
Yes!

Arming those students and allowing them to carry handguns would have saved countless lives.

Restricting the availability of guns only prevents innocent victims from protecting themselves. Criminals and perps will still get those guns anyway.
no
Definately yes but unfortunately most people in that state are pro guns. They seem to believe that it is a moral issue. I think it is both but clearly access to weapons has to be considered dangerous given what has happened.
NO. THEY SHOULD BE REPEALED.

Virginia Tech enforces a ban on weapons. Who had the weapon illegally? The criminal. Who weren't allowed to have weapons leaving them defenseless? The honest people who were slaughtered yesterday! And look how much the police did to protect them. I'm keeping my handgun. Thanks anyway.
either way they are gonna get their hands on a guy legally or illegally so it doesn't matter if they change them or not
