How has the virginia tech killer started a gun control politically scandal?

Its terrible how these same people who are calling for gun control cant seem to accept the fact that this is a problem of addressing one persons frustration, lonliness and hatred, rather than somethign anyone or any guiun control ban could have stopped.

Im not trying to sound heartless -- I truly feel for all the victims families.

But in being realistic, what would allowing students to carry guns on campus really do?How has the virginia tech killer started a gun control politically scandal?
I feel it will be used by one of the runners for president, watch and see, make all these promises of better gun control and they can't stop a 23 or 24 year old from getting his hands on 2,especially a mentally unstable guy.How has the virginia tech killer started a gun control politically scandal?
if only the professor that gave his life to save many of his students had a gun, either concealed on him or locked in his desk, he may have been able to save many other students

how many truly needed to die when a armed teacher could have put a quick stop to the situation
I am in Australia... about a decade ago Martin Bryant went on a rampage and killed many people.

After this our government decided to do something about it.

Soon after, everyone who owned a gun had to hand it in to the police, or have a valid reason for owning it, for example a farmer, and have a locked gun cabinet, otherwise they would be prosecuted.

Touch wood, I beleive it has had a positive effect.

';It is not the guns that kill people, it is the people who use them'; So, with this in mind, If these ppl that are full of hatred and lonliness cant get hold of a gun, how can they use it to release their terror and frustration?

AMERICANS SHOULD STOP SELLING GUNS FULL STOP. The only people that could possibly lose out from this would be gun sellers who may lose a little profit.

You have no idea how many other things in the country would benifit from this also.

GUNS should NEVER be made available to ANYONE except for police etc.. or people wh have a genuine, proven need for them, and even then they must be licensed and locked in a secure cabinet.

Compare australia's gun tradgey rate to americas! In many ways america is more advanced, because it has so many more people, which make for more ideas and so on. If australia can do it, so can america.

ITS NOT THE GUNS FAULT ITS THE BAS*TARDS THAT GET HOLD OF THEM.

PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE. PREVENT THE GUNS FROM FALLING INTO THE WRONG HANDS.

It may take years for america to get all the illegal guns of the streets, but in the end it will happen.

WHICH WOULD YOU RATHER?

A: To look back in 10 years and think, wow, the crime rate has dropped, shootings are majorly less, people arent needlessly dying from guns in the wrong peoples hands, havent we done a good job...

OR

B: Keep watching all these people die, needlessly and wrongly and keep wondering why the hell its happening, all the while blaming each other and never doing anything to fix it.

No matter what you do, nothing will get better until you ELIMINATE THE GUN.

In response to Candlemans answer above me, how dumb are you? If there were no guns available to people who didnt need them, like people who live in cities, (what bloodly use are they to people like this? - are they going to shoot at pigeons or soemthing? Dont think so) it wouldnt have happened to start with and the teacher wuldnt have needed to protect himself and his students.

A teacher is just a general person, he is not a specially trained police officer and nor does he have firearms training. He is no better equiped to handle the gun that anyone else.

When you study to become a teacher - special firearms training to preotect your students is not included in the job description is it... Your ridiculous Candleman.

He is no better than, say, one of the students having a firearm... why dont you say, what if each student had a gun to protect themselves? Same problem.

If everyone knows that other people are possitively carrying guns, it leads to MORE chaos!

How dumb can you be???

GET RID OF THE PROBLEM PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE

Writersblock2006 - I think we are on the same page with this - mostly anyways!

Its such a controversial issue.

Yes, guns would still be obtainable illegally but slowly but surely they would be eliminated, less guns equals less chance of the wrong person coming into contact with it! Its fairly simple. Over time things could only get better.

Im not in america so Im not really knowledgable about some of the things over there, but what reason does anyone have to own a gun apart from farmers, hunters, police etc.. (who have valid reasons)

Apart from not ';wanting to feel safe and protect themselves and their families'; Now, we are going back in a circle because.................. people are wanting guns to protect themselves from other people with guns! Its ridiculous! If there were no guns, no problem. Of course you could never eliminate guns entirely but isnt every life saved with a real and proper gun law worth it?

Good topic :)
